Travel Advice

Many airlines link directly to Cape Town, from the East (often from the Gulf states), Europe and USA. These flights are not as frequent as to Johannesburg. Johannesburg destinations will require an onward link to Cape Town, usually on an internal airline. If you are intending to attend only the conference, see a few sights around Cape Town, and then return, you are strongly advised to take one of these direct flights to Cape Town.

If you fly into Johannesburg you will have to change to a local flight to Cape Town: this will add about 4 to 5 hours to your flight, as you have to allow 2 hours for the changeover, and the 2 hour flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town. There are a limited number of direct flights to Durban, a nice tropical destination, but again, you will be faced with a long changeover and 2 hour flight to Cape Town. There are, however, some good National Parks along the east coast and up in the Drakensburg mountains, which will probably be snow covered in July.

If, however, you intend to see one of the large game reserves and other sights near Johannesburg, then you should route yourself via Johannesburg. The route from Johannesburg to Cape Town is heavily traded, and some bargain prices are available for early bookings. These may be cheaper than relying on your carrier to take you all the way. In some cases, the international airlines code share with these local airlines.
