Transportation information (hotels, social events, University of Cape Town)
The transport schedule is built around transporting delegates to and from five designated hotels in the downtown Waterfront precinct of Cape Town city and the conference venue on the University of Cape Town by bus. The designated hotels are: The Cullinan, The City Lodge, The Protea Breakwater Lodge, The Protea Cape Castle and The Protea Victoria Junction.
A supplementary evening service will transport delegates staying at on-campus student dorms (Graca Machel Residence (Lower Campus), off Main Road, Rondebosch) to and from the Waterfront precinct.
N.B. Delegates booked into Fuller Residence have been moved to Graca Machel Residence to accommodate several simultaneous events on campus. We apologise for any inconvenience this change may cause to IGARSS’09 delegates)
There is no additional charge for using the bus service. For persons who have elected to stay at other venues, the cost of transport to one of the designated pick up or drop off points will be for their own account.
Use clearly marked metered taxis or shuttle services with a formal desk. Taxi service and shuttle information is listed below the schedule and will be available from the IGARSS’09 volunteer crew.
Once registered, please display your name tag when in the conference venue, at conference functions and when boarding the buses.
For persons arriving by car or other means, the Campus Information Office and the Campus traffic officials have been briefed on the conference and will guide you to the venue.
Parking
Free conference parking is available in parking bays P4, P5 and P17.

Access and Registration Badges
IGARSS 2009 is a private event, hosted on the campus of the University of Cape Town. Except for the opening plenary session in the Jameson Hall on Monday 13th July, which is open to the public, the sessions and exhibition are limited to delegates who have completed registration fees and paid the requisite fees, or invited guests who must be made known to the Local Organising Committee. One day registration facilities are provided for incidental visitors to the meetings.
Delegates are requested to wear their name tags at all times while in the conference precinct. Identification may be requested for entrance to the buildings or venues, including the Tuesday evening IGARSS BY NIGHT dinners.
Personal Safety
Cape Town, like any large city, has risks of theft and criminality. Additional security guards will be on patrol in and around the University of Cape Town venues for the duration of the conference. Nevertheless, please take sensible precautions, both on and off campus, such as:
- Do not walk around alone.
- Avoid lonely or dark streets and places.
- Do not draw money at automatic tellers in lonely places or if there are strangers in the vicinity. Preferably, have a friend standing by, and avoid being distracted by strangers while operating an ATM, or draw money from the hotels or inside banks.
- Avoid carrying cameras or obvious tourist attire when walking in city streets.
- Lock valuable in the room safes provided by the hotels, including your lap tops (if they will fit) when you leave your room.
- Do not leave valuables in cars, especially not visible on back seats.
- Lock car doors while in transit.
